TITLE: Photonics for high-speed and efficient neuromorphic technologies

ABSTRACT: Photonic approaches that emulate the powerful computational capabilities of the brain are attracting increasing interest as radically new paradigms for ultrafast neuromorphic (brain-inspired) information processing and artificial intelligence. In this talk, I will review our research on neuromorphic photonic systems based on artificial optical spiking neurons and photonic spiking neural networks (SNNs) for computation across different photonic (integrated) platforms, including semiconductor lasers, resonant tunnelling diodes, and passive micro-ring resonators. I will also describe their potential for enabling high-speed, low-energy, and hardware-friendly neuromorphic (spike-processing) photonic systems that deliver excellent performance across complex sensing and information-processing tasks, such as dataset classification, time-series analysis, and prediction.
SHORT BIO: Antonio Hurtado is Professor of Neuromorphic Photonics at the University of Strathclyde’s Institute of Photonics (IoP) and a Turing AI Fellow. He founded and leads Strathclyde’s Neuromorphic Photonics Lab, where he conducts research into photonic technologies for high-speed, energy-efficient, brain-inspired computing and sensing. His research is currently supported by UK and EU programmes. These include, among others, the EIC Pathfinder Open project SpikePro and the MSCA Doctoral Network MindNet, funded by the EU; as well as the UK Multidisciplinary Centre for Neuromorphic Computing NeuroSync, and the Innovation and Knowledge Centre in Neuromorphic Hardware Neuroware, funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
