Cosme González Ayani is a new postdoctoral researcher who has joined the Interdisciplinary studies based on nanoscopic systems (ESISNA) group with a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship.
He started at the ICMM last 1st of September. Outside the labs, he loves hiking and rock climbing, or simply spending time outside.
Where do you come from?
I carried out my PhD research at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and IMDEA Nanociencia, under the supervision of Amadeo López Vázquez de Parga and Fabián Calleja.
After my PhD, I moved to Croatia, where I spent three years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Physics in Zagreb.
What have you worked on so far?
My research has mainly focused on two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, studied at low temperatures using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM).
I am particularly interested in the growth of 2D materials and heterostructures and in investigating the electronic ground states that emerge at low temperatures as a result of many-body interactions.
What will you work on? With whom?
My MSCA project, SPEED (Single-Photon Emitters from Engineered Defects for Nanoscale Quantum Optics), aims to achieve an atomic-level understanding and deterministic control of defect-based single-photon emitters in transition metal dichalcogenides.
I have joined ESISNA to combine my experience in 2D materials and scanning probe microscopy with the group's expertise in atomic-scale photophysics. Our goal is to engineer defects and defect arrays with atomic-scale precision in 2D materials and investigate their single-photon emission properties.
Why ICMM?
ICMM, and particularly the ESISNA group, offers a unique environment for carrying out this project. The group has extensive expertise in atomic-scale photophysics and has developed advanced low-temperature scanning probe platforms combining STM, nc-AFM and tip-enhanced spectromicroscopy with photon-correlation measurements.
This makes it an ideal place to bring together my background in 2D materials and atomic-scale characterization with optical experiments at the single-photon level.
And a personal touch: any hobbies?
I enjoy sports in general, but my two main hobbies are hiking and rock climbing. Whenever I have the chance, I like spending time outdoors.
What would you like to contribute to the institute?
I hope to contribute my experience in the growth and atomic-scale characterization of 2D materials, while also bringing new ideas and collaborations across different research areas. I would also like to contribute to the collaborative atmosphere of the institute, sharing knowledge and learning from researchers with different backgrounds and expertise.
