Advancing materials science to successfully face tomorrow’s challenges

The accreditation as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence, a recognition of the high quality of the research carried out at ICMM, was received in 2025. We are now part of a selected club of 35 research centers in Spain, among which only 6 are in the area of materials science and technology.

To advance in scientific leadership at an international level, work in the frontier of knowledge and generate high-impact results, the Severo Ochoa Accreditation provides around 5 M€ for 6 years through the grant CEX2024-001445-S (MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033)

Our Vision

We are committed to leading and advancing scientific knowledge to address some of the most pressing societal challenges through innovation in materials science and nanotechnology. At ICMM, we aim to be at the forefront of scientific discovery and technological innovation, tackling critical challenges in energy efficiency, quantum technologies, personalized medicine, and more.

By fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment, we ensure that our researchers have access to the latest technologies and interdisciplinary resources, enabling them to deliver real-world solutions with far-reaching impact.

The plan is structured around three key objectives:

laboratorio de Células

Our commitment is to spearhead advancements in the following domains:
•    Materials and devices for energy-efficient digital information processing
•    Design of materials for quantum technologies
•    Development of atomically/molecularly engineered materials
•    Safe-by-design materials for the circular economy
•    Design of advanced materials, instruments and devices for personalized medicine

The fulfilment of this objective is based on fostering collaborations among researchers from different specialties and research groups tackling forefront challenges. Through cross-disciplinary approaches, we aim to find innovative solutions that will maximize the value of research outcomes.
These efforts are supported by cutting-edge platforms, including:

•    Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (webpage)
•    Nanofabrication Laboratory
•    Prototyping Laboratory
Additionally, we promote the utilization of ICMM’s scientific facilities by companies, fostering innovation and the application of our research results in the industry.

In a competitive research center like ours, we must invest in cutting-edge instrumentation. And, through our annual COMPETE-TRL (Transform, Renew, Lead) funding programme, we drive innovation and promote interdisciplinary synergetic work across the ICMM research groups.

To promote a culture of collaboration, we organize activities such as our biannual ICMM-DAYS.

The strategic plan is complemented by a series of horizontal actions that will contribute to consolidate the ICMM leading position in Materials Science research and to strengthen our capabilities:

Horizontal Actions at ICMM

To support these actions three specialized offices have been created and fostered:
•    International Projects Office
•    Transfer Knowledge Office
•    Communication Office
