Cefe López, a researcher at Materials Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM), CSIC, signs a frontispiece at Advanced Materials magazine, one of the main publications in the sector. The scientist wrote an article in which he reviews the relationship between the progresses of advanced materials and a new scenario represented by Artificial Intelligence.

"The search for new advanced materials has been a low process, in which testing numerous compositions, morphologies, etc. for their properties slows down discovery", reads the cover. "High-throughput screening methods can greatly benefit from incorporating artificial intelligence, notably machine learning, techniques", it continues. "These two routes combine in a cycle of materials science and technology progress reviewed by Cefe López".

In his article, the researcher explains that Artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining strength, so "materials science can both contribute to and profit from it". He concludes that prospects for AI in materials science "come in the two tacitly implied areas. They involve the development of materials and techniques to implement AI-running devices and the use of AI to discover new materials for other applications".

However, it will not be easy: "Probably one of the most important obstacles for the future development of AI methods is the availability of high-quality data", López explains.
