Vahram

He is from Armenia and just joined the Photonic Crystal Group. Vahram Voskerchyan is a new researcher at the Material Science Institute of Madrid. Here you can learn more about him:

What have you worked on so far?

During my research career, I have mainly worked in the field of integrated Photonics. First I started to work in the Nanoelectronics faculty in Technion Israel, where I was investigating novel ways to integrate 2D materials with Silicon.

Later I joined UVIGO in Galicia where I continued working in the integrated photonics field and developed a novel device for LiDAR applications on Silicon Platform. I successfully measured and characterized it.

During my PhD I worked in Fraunhofer HHI (Berlin) where I developed novel slanted grating couplers for InP platform and also worked in VPI photonics and BrightPhotonics in the Netherlands where I have made a novel software for fast simulations from the layout level using Wave Propagation Method. I am very passionate about the field of Photonics, especially about Integrated Photonics Circuits.

What will you work on? With whom?

I will be working with David Pedro Garcia and making a novel system based on the optomechanical structure to mimic brain function and enable optical computations.

Why did you choose ICMM?

I was specifically attracted to the Neuropic project. I find it very fascinating and challenging. Since starting my PhD I have been keeping a keen eye on the topic of neuromorphic photonics and I see great potential in utilizing optomechanical structures and harnessing their rich physical properties to develop or pave a way for more neuromorphic photonics application. And I felt that my skills fit well for this project.

Moreover ICMM provides excellent facilities to do fundamental research, has a great reputation and an impact. And I hope I can learn a lot and grow as a professional here while learning more about fundamental research.

And a personal touch: any hobbies? What would you like to contribute to the institute?

I have two main hobbies, BASS guitar and chess.
