Rodrigo Gómez is a new member of the Materials Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC), where he is part of the Design and Prototyping Laboratory Unit. Here is his history:
I am originally from Colombia, where I graduated as an Electronic Engineer. In the year 2000, I moved to Barcelona, where I worked for 15 years—initially with the Biomedical Applications Group (GAB) and, in later years, with the Micro and Nano Tools Group (MNTL), both part of the Barcelona Institute of Microelectronics (IMB-CSIC). With the latter group, I completed a PhD in Microelectronic Technologies Applied to Health Sciences.
After that period, I returned to Colombia for nine years, where I worked as a professor in Biomedical Engineering. I was also involved with the national training institute SENA, specifically within its innovation program SENNOVA. There, I participated in technology innovation projects (Tecnoparques program) aimed at supporting entrepreneurs in Bogotá, and collaborated with the General Secretariat of the institution.
In 2025, I moved back to Spain and joined the ICMM, where I currently provide support to the Knowledge Transfer Committee within the Design and Prototyping Laboratory Unit.
I came to the ICMM while searching for CSIC centers near Madrid that had a connection with the fields I had previously worked in.
I was not previously familiar with the ICMM, and I have been positively surprised by the number of researchers and the diversity of research areas. I am personally grateful for the kindness and helpfulness of the administrative staff, the researchers I have interacted with so far, and my office colleague.
I do not have many hobbies, although recently—due to the four hours I spend commuting on public transport—I have resumed reading topics related to technology, science, and, depending on the day, philosophy.
