Adrián Carreño Hernández (Valdemoro, Madrid) arrived at the ICMM last February to begin his PhD, working with two groups: Supramolecular, Polymeric and Reticular Materials (SUPREMA) and Nanomagnetism and Magnetization Processes. We spoke with him and discovered that he is a sporty guy but, above all, he loves volleyball. He can’t wait to play in the ICMM volleyball tournament!
What have you worked on so far?
I've worked in supramolecular chemistry in UCM in the lab of Luis Sanchez, I did the synthesis of diferents quiral PBIs, study the aggregate type, the polymerization process, their spectroscopy characteristics, etc.
What will you work on? With whom?
The name of my tesis is SPINS (Selective Probing of Innovative Nanochiral Structures). Im going to work again in supramolecular chemistry but, in this case, I will do the synthesis of other quiral materials and study a new effect, called CISS effect. Also, I have to learn how to use the AFM; more precisely, I'm going to learn novel AFM techniques, mc-AFM, that not too much people use here in Spain, but its so important in the field of the CISS efect. Im going to work with Amparo Ruiz Carretero and Miriam Jaafar Ruiz-Castellanos.
Why ICMM?
Because the work that is done here its so impressive, it have nice labs with a very good quality instruments, and the people, I mean, at least the people I've known are sooo nice!
And a personal touch: any hobbies? What would you like to contribute to the institute?
I like to do too many things: trekking, videogames, climb (only in climbing walls jaja), read (Brandom Sanderson)... But, with difference, the most is playing volleyball. I have played for 6 years in the team of my city, and I love it.
