Abstract: Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles are highly versatile nanomaterials whose performance in biomedical applications is critically determined by their physicochemical and magnetic properties.

Over the past years, our research has focused on the development of robust and reproducible synthetic strategies to precisely control nanoparticle size, shape, crystallinity, aggregation state and surface characteristics, with the ultimate goal of establishing clear relationships between nanoarchitecture, magnetic behaviour and biological function.

Recent work has specifically addressed the rational design of magnetic mesocrystals with enhanced heating efficiency for magnetic hyperthermia, as well as the rapid microwave-assisted synthesis of these nanoparticles with controlled magnetic anisotropy. Surface engineering is also a key tool to control the nano–bio interface, modulating nanoparticle–cell interactions, cellular uptake, intracellular localization and aggregation, providing an additional level of control over magnetic hyperthermia performance.

These advances illustrate how precise control over nanoscale organization can be used to tune magnetic performance while improving synthetic reproducibility and scalability
