Nanostine, a spin-off of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) co-created by staff from the Madrid Institute of Materials Science (ICMM-CSIC), has closed a funding round of one million euros to accelerate the industrialization and commercialization of its technology.

The deeptech company, specialized in advanced coatings and functional nanomaterials, has had the participation of national and international private investors, business angels, and professionals linked to the technological and industrial sectors for this operation, in addition to investors brought in through Sego Venture.

During the process, Nanostine has also been accompanied by Apbey to define its growth roadmap and has sought to incorporate investors capable of providing industrial experience, market knowledge, and a long-term vision, according to a company statement.

The company develops coatings that modify surface properties to meet specific industrial needs. Through its own gas-phase and ultra-high vacuum deposition processes, it designs materials with specific functionalities for high value-added sectors such as sensors, space, energy, health, and advanced materials.

Now, the firm will allocate the funds to expand its technical and productive capacity over the next two years, incorporate talent in strategic areas, advance in new validations with clients, and reinforce its commercial activity.

"This round marks a turning point for Nanostine. We have demonstrated that our technology works and now we have the necessary resources to industrialize it, accelerate its arrival to the market, and transform that potential into real projects together with our clients," explains Daniel González, CEO of the company.

Beyond the financial contribution, the company has sought to incorporate investors capable of providing industrial experience, market knowledge, and a long-term vision. This backing is particularly relevant in the deeptech field, where development, validation, and scaling require specialized equipment, longer maturation cycles, and close collaboration with industrial partners.

After several years focused on the development of its technological platform, Nanostine is beginning a stage aimed at converting its advances into industrial applications and recurring contracts. The company has validated its technology together with different industrial partners and reference organizations, including the European Space Agency. These collaborations have made it possible to demonstrate the potential of its coatings in demanding environments and reduce the risk associated with their future commercial implementation.

The roadmap for the next two years contemplates expanding productive capacity, transforming the validations carried out into commercial projects, and reinforcing Nanostine's presence in the markets with the greatest potential.

"Our goal is not to develop technology in isolation, but to create solutions that respond to specific industry needs, provide a competitive advantage, and can scale sustainably," the company states.

High value-added nanoparticles

The spinoff Nanostine is dedicated to the research, development, and commercialization of high value-added nanoparticles and nanostructured coatings. The manufactured nanoparticles are completely free of ligands on their surface, which makes them especially suitable for applications in different fields, such as the aerospace sector, energy, and nanomedicine.

The spin-off was co-founded by Yves Huttel and Lidia Martínez, a researcher and a researcher at the Madrid Institute of Materials Science, and has won awards such as the 'Open Call for Deep Tech Start-ups' at the Transfiere 2024 Forum. Nanostine was also one of the companies awarded on June 30 last year in the first edition of the Coral Awards, an award funded by the European project Healthpreneurs that recognizes innovative initiatives with the capacity for impact and growth.
