The Madrid Institute of Materials Science (ICMM-CSIC) has organized the I School on Techniques at Large Facilities for Biomedical Applications. The event, organized within the framework of the Severo Ochoa and Max Programs of Excellence, has taken place at the ICMM facilities on September 24th.

This school is aimed at students, early-career researchers and established researchers interested in the use of large-scale scientific facilities for biomedical applications. The objective of providing a practical, up-to-date overview of various techniques available at large-scale facilities, including synchrotrons, specialized facilities and advanced analysis platforms, with a particular emphasis on their application in the biomedical field.

For this edition, which was attended by around twenty people we were delighted to welcome Eva Pereiro, scientist responsible of the Soft X-ray microscopy beamline MISTRAL at ALBA Light Source, located at Barcelona (Spain), to talk about imaging across scales with visible light, DUV, X-rays and electrons.

The second speaker was Sylwia Pawledzio, ICMM researcher at the Spanish Line of the European synchrotron (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, who talk about synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction for biomedical research. In third place, Belén Cortés, from CMAM (Centro de Micro-Análisis de Materiales), gave a talk about her experience in building a radiobiology beamline at CMAM. Finally, the last speaker was the ICMM researcher and coordinator of the school Ana Espinosa. She delved into the subject of exploring nanomaterial transformations and function at the bio-nano interface with X-ray.

The School finished with a visit to the CMAM facilities, located at the Autonomous University of Madrid campus.
