The university year begins at the Materials Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM), CSIC and, with it, the postgraduate courses by our research groups. This September 5th, the first began: 'Photoelectron and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (XPS and AES)', led by Research Professor Isabel Montero Herrero, from the Surface Nanostructuring for Space and Terrestrial Communications Group.
The course, which is face-to-face and has theoretical and practical aspects, has received a huge welcome. According to the teacher, even after closing the registration period applications have been received to enter, so finally, they have extended the number of posts to 30 people.
This postgrad is designed for people with a Bachelor's or Degree in Physics, Chemistry, Architecture, and Engineering and addresses photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). As the program indicates, these are irreplaceable techniques for the non-destructive quantitative analysis of material surfaces. They allow to obtain information on the composition, chemical state, and electronic structure and, in many cases, with them, it is possible to obtain short-range structural information.
In addition to XPS and AES, this postgraduate course also addresses the applications of synchrotron light to the characterization of materials. On the other hand, in the practical part, a complete experiment is carried out with the use of the instrument (spectrometer) and analysis of the results.
The course is taught by Research Professor Isabel Montero Herrero, Senior Scientist Yves Huttel and Dr. Manuel Izquierdo, European XFEL. It will last until December 9.
