Dr. María Concepción Gutiérrez works on the design and application of different eutectic mixtures (Deep Eutectic Solvents, DESs) in electrochemical energy storage systems. Her research work presents two main lines based on the use of these eutectic solvents for (1) the development of new safe and eco-friendly electrolytes with a wide operational voltage window in a wide range of temperatures in energy storage systems to provide high power and energy densities; and (2) the recycling and selective recovery of metals from spent battery cathodes. To advance in these challenges and to establish synergies between solvation, structure and functionality, Dr. Gutiérrez also aims to study and broaden the knowledge of the physical-chemical properties of these neoteric solvents and their dilutions. Always keeping in mind the sustainability of processes and materials, her previous works have focused on the use of eutectic mixtures for the preparation of materials with a hierarchical structure with applications as electrodes in supercapacitors, as catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) or for gas absorption.
She is the author of more than 100 scientific articles, 84% of them included in the first quartile (Q1), 3 book chapters and more than 70 communications in national and international conferences. It has an h-index of 41 and her works have more than 6,000 citations. In addition, she has supervised 8 doctoral Theses (currently, two of them are in progress). She is also co-author of 2 CSIC patents.
