Xinming Xing was born in a coastal city in Shandong province of China, the hometown of Confucius, and now is working at the Materials Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC) as a new postdoctoral researcher with Miguel Muñoz Rojo. He is working on the CVD growth of 2D MXene materials.
What have you worked on so far?
In 2021 I received my PhD in materials science from the SIMAP lab at the University Grenoble Alps (FRANCE) where I was working on the surface reconstruction of SiC single crystal in the liquid environment at high temperatures. From 2022 to 2024 I was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Twente (Netherlands) where I fabricated and characterized the graphitic thermal straps with the CVD-grown 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) in the group of Professor Jimmy Faria Albanese. From December 2024 I started working in the 2D Foundry group carrying out the CVD growth of 2D MXene materials. My research interests are crystal growth (including 3D and 2D) and the structure-physicochemical properties-performance relationships of the material.
What will you work on? With whom?
I will work on the CVD growth of 2D MXene materials with Dr. Miguel Muñoz Rojo, which is part of his ERC consolidator project that related to the thermal management of batteries. I will also work closely with Azra Khan, a new predoctoral researcher under the supervision of Miguel and me. The goal of my work is to grow wafer scale two dimensional Mxene by using a home built showerhead CVD reactor. Together with other team members in this project, the relations between the structure, physicochemical and thermal transport properties of the synthesized materials will be explored.
Why did you choose ICMM?
ICMM is one of the most prestigious institutes in the materials science field. I am happy to join the 2D foundry group where many excellent researchers are dedicating in the fascinating world of the 2D materials. Another reason is Spain is well-known as a nice country to live and I also want to feel the hospitality of Spanish people.
And a personal touch: any hobbies? What would you like to contribute to the institute?
In my free time, I like doing sports including running, cycling, weight training and playing badminton. I also like cooking though I have limited time for it now (and my receipts are gradually transferring from Chinese to European;)) During my stay in ICMM, I hope I could share my knowledge and experiences in crystal growth. On the other hand, I would like to build new connections and learn from other researchers in ICMM.
