Guilherme de Vilhena, a researcher at the Madrid Institute of Material Sciences (ICMM-CSIC) has been designed as an invited researcher at the French Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). Specifically, was the the Institut Lumière Matière (iLM) at Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 that proposed and formalized the position of visiting researcher at the CNRS.

"The aim is to consolidate the collaboration between the iLM and our group at the ICMM, NanoTrib", explains the researcher. He says Lyon is a leading center in Europe for research on tribology and nanoscale heat transfer. "Given NanoTrib's international standing in the study of non-equilibrium matter, this invitation allows us to join forces, combining our theoretical expertise in molecular dynamics with the talent and excellent infrastructure present in Lyon, and potentially lay the groundwork for internationally coordinated projects," adds Vilhena. 

That way, Vilhena will visit some CNRS laboratories during different weeks in the year: "I'll be based at the Institut Lumière Matière (iLM) in Lyon. But I will also be visiting laboratories at INSA (The National Institute of Applied Sciences of Lyon) and at École Centrale," says the researcher. Specifically, he will be spending several weeks in Lyon this year and he is currently there for a three-week stay, and he will return later in the winter to continue the collaborative work.

The central purpose is to investigate new forms of energy transfer and manipulation at the nanoscale, directly connecting these phenomena with heat transport and friction. "We seek to decipher the fundamental dissipation mechanisms in non-equilibrium systems, critical knowledge for both optimizing energy efficiency and thermal management in miniaturized technologies," says the researcher.

This research stay allows Vilhena's team to integrate NanoTrib's theoretical and molecular dynamics models with Lyon's capabilities, advancing energy control at the atomic level. In addition to the direct research, it helps consolidate this strategic alliance between the CSIC and the CNRS.
