Alejandro Lasso Castillo, a new member of the Quantum materials for Quantum Technologies group

Alejandro Lasso Castillo is a new member of the Quantum materials for Quantum Technologies Group. He will spend six month in working in this group thanks to a JAE Intro. He is from Madrid and completed his Bachelor’s degree at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. After that, he has performed an international Master’s program across multiple universities: Rome La Sapienza, the University of Porto, and the University Paris-Saclay. "During this program, I undertook an internship for my Master’s thesis, focusing on research related to Charge Density Waves", he adds.

What will you work on? With whom?

My research focuses on quantum phenomena in moiré heterostructures and multilayer systems, specifically in twisted bilayer graphene, under the supervision of Leni Bascones. 

Why did you choose ICMM?

Firstly, I love this campus; the combination of natural surroundings and open spaces creates an inspiring environment. Additionally, I appreciate ICMM's active engagement in outreach and commitment to current social issues. Lastly, I was specifically seeking a condensed matter theory group with expertise in graphene, and Leni Bascones stood out as the ideal supervisor for my research interests.

And a personal touch: any hobbies? What would you like to contribute to the institute?

I am an avid judo practitioner and a big fan of the discipline. To contribute to the institute, I am very interested in participating in outreach activities, particularly school visits and initiatives that bring science closer to university and school students.
