Miriam Jaafar, en su laboratorio

Miriam Jaafar Ruiz-Castellanos is one of the latest permanent researchers who are joining our Material Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC) these weeks. She is from Madrid and in the last 5 years has been working as a professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and as a researcher at the IFIMAC (Condensed Matter Physics Center).

What have you worked on so far?

My field of research has been magnetic materials, but from the point of view of magnetic force microscopy. This is my line of research, the development of new modes of operation in this technique as well as specific on-demand probes to be able to see what cannot be seen with commercial equipment. I have always enjoyed instrumental development.

What will you work on? With whom?

At the ICMM I will join the Nanomagnetism and Magnetization Processes group. Here I will bring my experience in Magnetic Force Microscopy, but my goal now will be to try to measure in a multi-parametric way, i.e. under different parameters simultaneously, at low temperature, varying magnetic fields, with and without illumination, etc. I have a current project to study rare-earth-free permanent magnets where we want to measure simultaneously layers of soft and hard magnetic materials (dual and subsurface contrast) and another project on materials with applications in spintronics where we want to address the issue of antiferromagnetic materials.

Why Did you choose ICMM?

I did my thesis here a few years ago and I think it is the perfect place to continue to grow as a researcher. I have great friends and collaborators here.

And a personal touch: any hobbies? What would you like to contribute to the institute?

I like spending time with my young children and my family, going for walks, going to the countryside. I love the beach and travelling. I enjoy reading and watching science fiction, fantasy and anime TV series. I'm a Real Madrid fan, especially basketball.
