Carlos Martínez Gómez is one of the latest new people at the Institute of Materials Science of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC), where he is working on his doctoral thesis at the Multifunctional and Supramolecular Materials group. The young man, originally from Alhaurín de la Torre (Málaga), studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Málaga and is now employed at the ICMM after completing his master's degree and doing an internship at this center last year.
What have you been working on?
My work experience began with a scholarship in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Málaga, and later as a senior technician on a project focused mainly on biofuels, diesel engines, emissions of polluting gases, and catalysis.
After that, I joined a company dedicated to the construction, processing, and distribution of bitumen as an Intern Engineer.
Following that, I did my Master's thesis and internships at ICP - ICMM - CSIC, where luckily I am now employed, one year later, working on my doctoral thesis.
What will be your work at the ICMM?
My doctoral thesis deals with the catalytic valorization of CO2; I will work on the synthesis and characterization of new MOF-type materials for 3 CO2 valorization reactions: RGWS, direct DMC synthesis, and DRM. These materials will be tested and optimized in this series of chemical reactions for subsequent scaling.
Why did you choose to come to this center?
Firstly, because I felt comfortable and at ease during my Master's thesis and internships, and secondly because I believe that it is a center with great potential in the field of Materials Science, from which I can gain knowledge and access characterization techniques that are not easily available everywhere. It offers great opportunities.
And a personal touch: tell us about a hobby and something you think you will contribute to our institute.
If I had to highlight a hobby, it would be socializing. I love meeting new people, listening, learning new things, etc., so I think I can contribute to a sense of camaraderie and fostering good working relationships.
