Abstract
Technology at the nanoscale has emerged as a primary challenge in science, as it gives rise to novel physical effects that can be intentionally modulated. With advancements in materials science pushing the boundaries of physics and chemistry, there is a crucial need to comprehend the origin of these distinctive properties and establish connections with changes occurring at the atomic scale. This often involves examining structural alterations in materials, frequently associated with crystal defects or terminations of crystal surfaces.
Particularly in the case of low-dimensional materials designed for energy and environmental applications, crystallography and the distribution of atomic species play a paramount role in determining their physical and chemical properties. This understanding is instrumental in enhancing their overall performance, including efficiency and selectivity in specific reactions.
In this seminar, I will elucidate the capabilities of (S)TEM (Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy) available for the scientific community at the Joint Electron Microscopy Center at ALBA (JEMCA). I will demonstrate how the integration of advanced electron microscopy imaging with electron spectroscopy in aberration-corrected STEMs enables us to explore elemental composition and structure with unprecedented spatial detail. Furthermore, this approach facilitates the determination of growth mechanisms and the correlation of structural properties with the materials' performance.
Short Biography:
Jordi Arbiol graduated in Physics at Universitat de Barcelona in 1997, where also obtained his PhD in 2001. Since 2015 he is ICREA Prof. at Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2). He was President of the Spanish Microscopy Society (SME) (2017-2021) and Vice-President (2013-2017). Since 2019, he is Member of the Executive Board of the International Federation of Societies for Microscopy (IFSM). He is Scientific Coordinator of the Joint Electron Microscopy Center at ALBA Synchrotron (JEMCA) and Founder member of e-DREAM. Since 2023 he is Associate Editor of Nano Letters (ACS). He has published more than 460 scientific papers, with more than 30500 citations and a h-index of 97 (GoS).
