Adriana García Alonso is a young researcher who will be working at the Material Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC) until, at least, March 2025. Thanks to a JAE Intro grant, she just joined the Multifunctional and Supramolecular Materials Group. Originally from Madrid, this young researcher completed her degree in Physics at the Complutense University of Madrid last year, and she is currently studying for a Master’s in Nanophysics and Advanced Materials at the same university.
What have you worked on so far?
During my undergraduate studies in Applied Physics, I was incredibly fortunate to dive into the world of nanomaterials, focusing my BSc thesis on a theoretical and experimental study of electron dynamics in two-dimensional TMD structures. Alongside the JAE Intro grant, I am currently collaborating as a Master's student at the university, working with Francisco Domínguez-Adame from QNG-UCM, and Jorge Quereda from the 2D Foundry Group. Our project is centered on exciton diffusion and ionization in 2D TMDs, and their optoelectronic properties.
What will you work on? With whom?
I will be working with Berta Gómez-Lor, Marta Iglesias, and their team on the collaborative project 'Photocatalysis Connection'. Specifically, our focus will be on studying photocatalysts based on organic semiconductors and metal-organic materials, and their efficiency in the degradation of emerging contaminants in water through photocatalysis.
Why did you choose ICMM?
I first came across the ICMM while working on my BSc thesis last year, and right away, it felt like a great place to pursue research in materials science. The research groups here are excellent, dynamic and easy-going. Although I chose a group outside my usual area of expertise, with the variety at ICMM, I’m sure anyone can find a group where they feel comfortable doing science. I’m extremely grateful to everyone who has welcomed me and continues to teach me something new every day.
And a personal touch: any hobbies? What would you like to contribute to the institute?
I love photography :) I would be happy to help in any way I can, using my curiosity to continuously learn and offer support to everyone.
