Lázaro Alejandro Domínguez Rodríguez is a Cuban researcher who just joined the ForceTool (Nanolithography, Nanomechanics and Force Microscopy) group, led by Ricardo Garcia after working in the Molecular Regulation of Heart Failure Group led by Enrique Lara Pezzi at the CNIC.
What have you worked on so far?
I have previously worked teaching physics laboratories in the fields of electromagnetics, optoelectronics and bioinstrumentation as well as digital medical image processing using MATLAB and electronics design using MULTISUM. Before joining the CSIC, I was working at the CNIC, specifically in the Group of Molecular Regulation of Heart Failure, as the final stage of culmination of my studies of the Master in Biomedical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, studying a possible therapy for the effects of the mutation in the TMEM43 gene, responsible for the most aggressive phenotype of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy: arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy type 5 (ACM5).
What will you work on? With whom?
I will be working on the nanomechanical characterization of cell behavior in response to external axial forces using atomic force microscopy techniques together with Francisco Espinosa.
Why did you choose ICMM?
Because I am fascinated by Physics and its branches of application, once I finished my Master's degree at the Polytechnic, it seemed to me an excellent opportunity to continue with the Doctorate in Theoretical Physics of Condensed Matter, Nanoscience and Biophysics at the UAM and for this, the ICMM stands as a reference center for scientific research that links both Physics and Biology.
And a personal touch: any hobbies? What would you like to contribute to the institute?
From a personal point of view, I love trekking, reading, and running around and although Jaime, Francisco, and Diana (Ricardo Garcia´s members group) have invited me to do it, I have not yet been able to join them... Soon it will be guys!
