CristinaÁlvarez

Cristina Álvarez Gómez de Segura has left Netherlands after 12 years to come back to Spain… and to work at the ICMM. She joined our institute a month ago to work in the Administration Department, in the area of national project management. She is another example of a scientist who turns to management, and, in this case, she brings a wide experience in science policy.

Where do you come from?

I have lived in the Netherlands for the past 12 years. I worked in the Oncology Department at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and at the European Uro-Oncology Group Foundation (EUOG). I managed investigator-initiated clinical research projects for international studies involving countries in Asia, Europe, and South America.

What have you worked on so far?

Throughout my career, I have worked in both the public and private sectors. I studied veterinary medicine and earned a PhD in food science and technology from the Instituto del Frio (CSIC). After completing a postdoctoral fellowship abroad, I shifted my career path and joined the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. I later worked at the Ministry of Science and Technology and subsequently at the Ministry of Science and Innovation, focusing on science policy. From that last position, I moved to the Netherlands with my family.

What will you work on? With whom?

I will be working in the Project Management Unit, specifically in the management of national projects, together with Nieves Iglesias and under the supervision of the Center’s Manager.

Why ICMM?

ICMM gives me the opportunity to continue working in Spain, managing research projects at a prestigious international center with a large portfolio of active projects.

And a personal touch: any hobbies? What would you like to contribute to the institute?

I hope to contribute with my support, professional experience, enthusiasm for learning, and collaborative spirit.

In terms of hobbies, I like to learn, I belong to a book club and running and yoga are how I stay active.
