The Institute of Materials Science in Madrid (ICMM-CSIC) actively participated in the latest edition of Science and Technology Week, offering six very different activities aimed at diverse audiences. In total, more than 500 students had the opportunity to see atoms and molecules, experiment with superconductivity, or enjoy a workshop in Spanish Sign Language.
Íñigo Bretos, coordinator of the Outreach Commission, is pleased with the reception of the institute's offerings, as all activities reached full capacity just minutes after the ticket request process opened.
In this way, the open house day 'Seeing Atoms and Molecules,' coordinated by Fran Espinosa, welcomed 32 students from vocational training. The workshops 'Superconductivity: a surprising quantum phenomenon,' organized by Leni Bascones and María José Calderón, brought together 320 middle and high school students.
ICMM also held two editions of its guided tours 'Discovering Materials,' coordinated by Eva María García Frutos and Margarita Darder, which welcomed 80 people, including 32 high school students. Attendees of these three activities also had the opportunity to enjoy the exhibition 'Science LGTBIQA+,' displayed in the center's hall.
We also ventured outside our headquarters. Specifically, Beatriz Pérez and Rafael Pérez brought their accessible workshop in Spanish Sign Language (LSE) to two schools, where they performed for 170 deaf children. Additionally, Íñigo Bretos and Jesús Ricote took the 'Touch Science' cart to a high school, where they conducted their scientific demonstrations for 140 people.
