The plenary session of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences (RAC) appointed two new full members at its session held on February 26. These are Miguel Ángel Martín-Delgado Alcántara and Gloria Platero, both specialists in the field of Physics.
Professor Gloria Platero is a researcher at the Materials Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC) and will be responsible for the area "Quantum Phases of Materials." Platero (Ciudad Real, 1956) joined the Academy at the request of Juan Rojo, Ignacio Cirac, and David Pérez García. With her appointment, there are 14 women with full membership, out of a total of 59 members of the RAC.
Martín-Delgado (Madrid, 1963) will lead the quantum computing department and joins at the suggestion of academics Arturo Romero, Jon Marcaide, and Ignacio Cirac. He will wear medal number 37. He joined the RAC as a corresponding member in 2010.

Platero's appointment as a full academician at the RAC joins a list of prestigious recognitions the researcher has garnered in recent months. Since January 2025, the research professor has also been elected Vice President and President of Commission C8 of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).
In addition, Platero ended 2024 with the Emmy Noether Distinction for her career in Physics. The prestigious award, given by the European Physical Society (EPS) to women for their careers in Physics, recognizes her "important contributions to the theoretical understanding of Floquet systems (out-of-equilibrium systems) and their impact on the expansion of quantum materials." It also highlights her for her "excellent mentoring of young researchers and for tirelessly fostering female talent in Physics." Platero is the third Spanish woman to receive this important award, just after Pilar López Sancho, also from the ICMM-CSIC.
