BERNABÉ GÓMEZ HERRERA

Bernabé Gómez Herrera is a madrileñean researcher who just started his PhD Thesis at the Materials Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC). He is no part of the Bioinspired Materials Group and is working under the guidance of Francisco del Monte and María Concepción Gutiérrez.

What have you worked on so far?

I earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and subsequently completed a Master's degree in 'Energy and Fuels for the Future' at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). During my undergraduate studies, I had also the opportunity to work at IETcc-CSIC as part of my Bachelor's thesis project. My work focused on the immobilization of surrogate radioactive waste in cements and geopolymers, which sparked a strong interest in materials science and energy-related applications.

Later, as part of my Master’s final project, I joined ICMM-CSIC (in the very same group that I will keep working with from now on) to explore the recycling and recovery of metals from lithium-ion battery cathodes, specifically those of the LFP type. This research allowed me to explore direct applications for recovered materials, reinforcing my passion for sustainable technologies and innovative solutions in the energy and materials science sector.

What will you work on? With whom?

During my PhD at ICMM, I will continue developing novel applications of deep eutectic solvents (DES) for the recycling and recovery of materials from various types of lithium-ion battery cathodes, not limited to LFP. My work will aim to enhance the efficiency, scalability, and environmental sustainability of these processes, as well as explore potential applications for the recovered metals and DES. This research will be carried out under the guidance of Francisco del Monte and María Concepción Gutiérrez.

Why did you choose ICMM?

I chose ICMM because of its expertise in materials science and its focus on sustainable technologies. My previous work here during my Master’s project allowed me to grow in this field, making it the ideal place to continue my research under expert guidance. Additionally, I felt very comfortable here, thanks to the friendly and supportive people, which made it an even more welcoming environment to pursue my PhD.

And a personal touch: any hobbies? What would you like to contribute to the institute?

In my free time, I enjoy archery, gaming, and playing padel. I would like to contribute to the institute by sharing my hobbies and by advancing scientific knowledge.
