Around 25% of permanent researchers from the Materials Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM), CSIC), are among the top cited authors around the world across all fields for career-long citation impact. According to data provided by Elsevier, a global leader in information and analytics which uses Scopus data, 17 of those researchers also appear in the one-year ranking corresponding to 2021.
Elsevier, which updated its science-wide author databases for standardized citation indicators this November, has created a publicly available database of top-cited scientists that provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions, and a composite indicator (c-score). All the calculations were performed using all Scopus author profiles as of September 1, 2022.
Within the data, we can see some of our permanent researchers between 2\% of top scientists of their main subfield discipline as well. Among the disciplines where our researchers stand out are nanoscience and nanotechnology, applied physics, general chemistry, and materials, for example.
For the ICMM, citation metrics are just another way to motivate our researchers to continue working and investigating, but not the only one. As even Elsevier points out, not appearing in this kind of ranking "does not mean that the author does not do good work". They are a way to measure some kind of research, but not all the work a researcher does in an investigative centre, where we study, teach and also do outreach actions, just citing some of the events we encourage our researchers to get involved.
