Abstract: The fast progress of artificial intelligence can not be but good news for the development of materials science. But the reverse is also true. Just as new materials, systems, and processes can be devised and optimized thanks to machine learning, their progress can be turned into innovative computing platforms. This talk hovers over some aspects of computation fundamentals and how and why neuromorphic inspiration offers to take over aiming at realizing artificial intelligence. The basics of machine learning are reviewed to understand its implementation and potential. The approaches most closely concerned with materials are broadly presented with certain emphasis on photonics. Then the impact these techniques have on the discovery of new advanced materials and some of the procedures currently used are presented.
