TITLE: Can Magnetic Force Microscopy see beyond the surface? From 2D Materials to Bacteria

ABSTRACT:  Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) are essential tools for high-resolution nanoscale characterization. However, probing buried or shielded magnetic signals remains a major challenge. In this presentation, I will showcase our recent advances in overcoming these limitations through the development of novel MFM probes and specialized operational modes. In particular, I will discuss the magnetic screening efficiency of different 2D materials—highlighting the intrinsic diamagnetic screening of few-layer graphene—alongside the direct imaging of individual magnetosome chains embedded deep within magnetotactic bacteria. These results demonstrate MFM's expanding capability to resolve complex subsurface phenomena across both materials science and biological systems.
