Alvaro Martín Gallo Cordova wins the EMA Young Scientist Award 2024

Alvaro Martín Gallo Córdova won the EMA Young Scientist Award 2024 for "his contributions aimed at bridging the gap between fundamental magnetism and impactful industrial applications collaborating with private and public entities". The young researcher got his PhD in 2022 from the Material Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC) and the Autonomous University of Madrid, and currently holds a postdoctoral researcher position at the ICMM, where he works alongside Puerto Morales, his thesis' director.

"He has focused on elucidating the formation pathway of multicore magnetic nanostructures with impressive heating capabilities and subsequently applied them in magnetically induced sustainable reactions – areas relatively unexplored until now", explains EMA about his award. The call for 2024 concerned only the Young Scientist Award and the nominations have been reviewed by a committee chosen among the General Council of EMA and chaired by Christian Back, the Officer for honors and awards.

Gallo says he feels "so happy" for the award, his fifth since he got his PhD: "It is my honor to represent Spain and the ICMM at the EMA prize", he adds. Now, as a postdoctoral researcher, he continues his work on magnetic nanoparticles: "I seeking to further advance in their applications", he explains. "I hope one day to be able to commercialize them to address societal problems".

From his point of view, one of the main reasons he received this award is his focus on bringing magnetism to practical applications, such as its use in the environment with real samples, "something that differs from the more basic research in magnetism that has been previously recognized; this approach definitely influenced the selection committee's decision", he concludes.

The European Magnetism Association (EMA) is a non-profit organisation promoting the development of magnetism and magnetic materials in Europe, through rising the visibility and the impact of research on fundamental and applied magnetism. EMA acts as an umbrella organisation for activities in magnetism in Europe.
