Characterization of Ti alloys as biomaterials

In this research project, we have investigated three Ti alloys, studying their properties for biomedical applications. But … which is the interest of these alloys (Ti-7Nb-6Al, Ti-13Nb-13Zr and Ti-15Zr-4Nb) taking into account that there is already a Ti alloy, Ti-6Al-4V, which is one of the most used metallic biomaterials due to some excellent properties? The reason is that some studies have revealed the toxic effects of V release. Therefore, it seems rather important to investigate others alloys with similar properties but without V.  The three non-containing V alloys were studied by means of different techniques. Additionally, a thermal treatment was applied to the alloys with the aim of forming an oxide, protective and biocompatible outer layer on the alloys. The following publications report all this work.
