"Atom Spangled Patchwork"
Dr. Sander Otte. NIST (United States)
STM
Technical Description:
Individual iron, cobalt and manganese atoms evaporated onto one-atom thick patches of copper-nitride on a copper(100) crystal surface. The patches of insulating copper-nitride appear as slight depressions with respect to the surrounding bare copper. In topography mode all three types of magnetic atoms look identical, but each can be readily identified by its unique set of spin excitations through Spin Excitation Spectroscopy.
