"2D organic glass formed by adsorption of cytosine molecules on a Au(111) surface"

Dr. Wei Xu. Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO) (Denmark)

Technical Description:
The STM image shows a self-assembled disordered pattern formed by cytosine molecules on a Au(111) surface. Cytosine molecules are rather mobile on the surface at room temperature, which can be described as a 2D fluid. By fast cooling the sample to 150 K the disordered patterns are formed, which can be explained as formation of 2D organic glass. Also, three elementary structural motifs (filament, five- and six-fold rings) can be singled out, which are studied at sub-molecular level.
