Constant current ("topography") STM image depicting the remarkable crystalline order of two-dimensional supramolecular architectures. The codeposition of diindenoperylene (DIP) and copper-phthalocyanines (CuPc) on a gold single crystal by molecular beam epitaxy leads to a variety of well ordered self-assembled nanostructures. DIP and CuPc are two planar organic molecules whose interest relies in their semiconducting properties, while gold is a usual contact material in organic based devices. The image depicts a 13 by 13 nm area of an Au(111) surface upon codeposition of the two molecules in a 1 to 1 ratio. The molecules arrange in rows of alternating molecular species with well defined molecular orientations. The image includes a domain boundary, with the molecular orientations in the right and left part of the image being mirrored with respect to the stacking direction.
