On-surface chemistry: From metal-organic networks to covalent architectures

Taking advantage of surface science techniques, in the last two decades a plethora of metal-organic and covalent structures have been designed on surfaces and their structural, electronic, optical and magnetic properties inspected at the atomic scale. In this talk, I will focus on our recent work concerning nanomaterials of potential use in optoelectronics, nanomagnetism and quantum computing. First, I will summarize our findings on lanthanide metal-organic networks. Second, I will revise our latest results concerning the homocoupling of molecular precursors to design unprecedented pi-conjugated nanomaterials. The potential of on-surface chemistry will be illustrated, anticipating fascinating prospects in chemical design by exploiting surface science techniques.
