Lanzarote is the easternmost island of
the Canary islands, in Spanish territory, but located at a distance of about
1,000 km of the Iberian Peninsula and just a bit more than 100 km far from the
African coast (map).
Lanzarote is an island of contrasts, with about 300 extinct volcanoes, declared
Reserve of the Biosphere by Unesco (volcanoes
map). Over 40% of the island is under some kind of protection with 13
protected enclaves and Timanfaya National Park standing out. Las Montañas de
Fuego (Fire Mountains) present themselves as a lunar landscape in an island of
beautiful beaches (more on
Lanzarote).
Playa Blanca is a quiet town in the south
of Lanzarote, which in recent years has become the third touristic site of the
island. A pleasant promenade extending along its 9km of a coast, invites
to walk along the seaside. Playa Blanca boasts the best climate of the island
and several fine sand beaches, being just a few kilometers far from the
wonderful Papagayo natural beaches (more on beaches in Playa
Blanca). At the west of Playa Blanca one can find Marina Rubicón
a
marina which adds to the small fishing harbor at the town
center.
