Three PhD studentships in Experimental Geochemistry/quantum mechanical modelling of Earth Materials.

Two of the three PhD projects will focus on experimental incorporation of volatile components into silicates and oxides at pressures and temperatures relevant for the deep upper mantle. Emphasis will be on laboratory- and synchrotron-based experimentation using multi-anvil apparatuses along with phase characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, high-resolution and analytical transmission electron microscopy. In the third project, theoretical studies of carbonates at high pressure and temperature will be performed using atomistic computer simulations. This includes electronic structure calculations in the framework of density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations using classical interaction potentials.

The positions are initially available for two years with a possible extension for another year starting as soon as possible. Salary level is due to the German civil service remunaration which amounts to approximately 20,000 € per year. The GFZ strives to increase the percentage of female employees in the field of science and encourages applications from female candidates. There is a kindergarden service available. Handicapped applicants will be given preference in the case of equal qualifications. Review of the applications will begin 4 weeks after announcement and continued until the positions are filled.

Applications with a CV including information about scientific background, a list of two referees with addresses, and a short description of motivation and experience relevant to the projects should be sent electronically to one the project leaders or as a hardcopy to
